Kaba Ltd (UK & Ireland) are pleased to announce that they are now a member of Secured by Design, a flagship UK Police initiative to help ‘design out’ crime through the use of high-quality innovative products and processes. On Monday 15th September 2014, Kaba received a coveted Secured by Design (SBD) Award for their pExtra cylinders including the Kitemark approved TS007 3-star cylinder pExtra Guard.
Secured by Design is the initiative owned by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) that aims to reduce crime through effective environmental design. The scheme also calls for the installation of security products that meet police approved standards. The Secured by Design logo is the only symbol that guarantees national Police approval of a product, providing architects, planners, specifiers, builders and end customers with reassurance that it provides a realistic level of resistance to criminal attack. It is widely recognised within the building industry and is increasingly being listed as a mandatory requirement in tenders.
Doug Skins a development officer for Secured by Design explained “The principles of secured by design have been proven to reduce the risk and the fear of crime. For example in West Yorkshire research demonstrated newly built developments that have Secured by Design award status are up to 75% less likely to experience crime.”
In order to achieve Secured by Design status, the pExtra cylinders had to adhere to the organisations rigourous test standards. Kaba’s innovative lock cylinder pExtra Guard that has been developed specifically to meet the TS007, British kitemark approved, 3-star cylinder standard protects your door from all common types of attacks suck as drilling, picking, bumping, snapping and even plug extraction. To provide a counter measure to, amongst others, the increasing threat of snapping locks, the cylinder itself features several layers of protection. In particular the cylinder features a sacrificial break slot, which ensures that in the event of the cylinder being snapped, the secure core of the lock is retained within the door preventing forced override of the cylinder.
Paul Spencer, Head of Marketing for Kaba UK and Ireland explained what the Secured by Design membership meant to the business. “Gaining Secured by Design approval for our pExtra cylinders is a significant achievement, demonstrating our commitment to safety and sustainability and providing our valued customers with reassurance that our product matches performance claims.”
